Facebook Places: A Goldmine For Geo, ccTLDs & Developers

August 18, 6 Comments - Author:

A few hours ago Facebook announced “Places”. This enables you to learn about where your friends are. For example, if you are having a coffee at your local cafe, you can let your friends know where you are and they can join you.

Take note GEO domain developers! If you own a geo .com or a ccTLD you will want to integrate this into your website. It will enable your visitors to:

1. Share where they are with their friends.

2. Find out where your friends are (nearby and further away).

3. Tag photos and status updates with places.

Here is a short video of the Facebook Places Launch. Enjoy!

Very interesting – looks like FB has ‘borrowed’ some of the foursquare model.

Re your comment about integrating this into a GEO website: wouldn’t FB users just go to their FB page rather than a GEO website to utilise FB Places?

Fizz: Yes that’s right, they would go there. The key is to integrate with FB. Over time, FB will provide a wealth of useful information (research) for developers to use on their sites.

I like the idea of implementing this into websites. I can think of one of my own that I want to try it out with. Do you have to create a facebook page for your site? guess I should go to fb places and find out.

Good to hear since I own about 15 CityRestaurants.com domains :)
thanks for the heads up.

Cheers Simon, will watch this development with keen interest to see how FB integration into GEO websites is managed in the future.

Glad you guys like it. I was watching the video just after the live event and decided to post it up. While Places has its benefits for GEO, its going to be a privacy minefield!
