Facebook Vanity URL = Domainer

June 13, 6 Comments

Mashable is reporting that 500,000 usernames were registered in 15 mins. Well I happened to be watching the clock tick down, and acquired the keyword “domainer”. Feel free to get in contact.

To be honest, I really didn’t think this would be as big as it was. Within minutes I had people sending me friend invites…. some were people I’d known on forums and others were fellow bloggers.

You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video

I’d be interested to know your views on this. Did you register a name? Are you even on facebook?

Hey Simon, Idon’t think Twitter or Facebook profiles should be considered as properties such as domain names, but more as a service to users. Is it even allowed to have multiple accounts?

The real value in these vanity URLs is for connecting with friends, family, clients and customers more easily.

Consider a year from now, when someone wants to connect with you on Facebook, what do you think they are going to try first? Your given name. Just like the .com, you should own that first!

Of course, not everyone can do this.. so then keywords, such as your http://facebook.com/domainer may be a nice alternative :)

Nice username but… I rather like my facebook.com/danieldryzek FU, which I can use in any business and it refers directly to me :)

I started buying “vanity social domains” months ago. Such as Facebookname.com or Twittername.com they seem to work really well and I have seen these PHP redirects get ranked at the top of the SERPS

I was able to get one that describes what I like to help people do: http://www.facebook.com/startabusiness I will be doing a major launch related to this topic so it does not hurt to have a matching profile…

With a vanity URL like: http://www.facebook.com/startabusiness I also think that it will prompt a much higher volume of JV requests which is part of the goal of vanity URL – to prompt an action or identity!
